Description:
Seasons of Folding reflects Che’s homesickness, transforming his longing into folded structures that honor family memories and the landscapes of his hometown in Taiwan—especially the subtropical, rainy harbor city Keelung, located just next to the capital, Taipei. Centered on missing his grandmother’s cooking, Che recalls moments of helping with family meals. The work explores his emotional responses to these images: the more he treasures these scenes, the stronger the nostalgia they arouse, inviting contemplation on impermanence and acceptance.

Notes:
Feeling and emotions are hitting waves, you get overwhelmed when they rush to high tide; as they gradually alleviate, things become clear; it’s clear… you barely understand what has happened and they are meant to be.

I was very homesick during my time studying abroad. I kept photos of home, family, and close friends with me but found it difficult to look at them—I wanted to embrace them, hold onto them. The images I accumulated serve as diaristic entries, mediating and reflecting on my life experiences in foreign cities while recalling past times. Through tactile and physical activities—folding, cutting, pasting, and twisting—I transform photographic paper into sculptures that manifest the bonding of family, friendship, and land. As an integral aspect of my installations, I invite collaborators to join in site-responsive performances combining text, sound, and images—mine and theirs—to explore emotions and thoughts connected to the lands and places we call home. The work encompasses both artists and viewers, resonating with the present moment we share and with our broader, diverse worldly contexts. This work has been exhibited at the SAIC Washington Gallery in Chicago.
