“The Install Situation” was initially an unconventional show that used performance and leftover objects to convey the experience of art handling. Co-directed by Che Pai and I-Chien Chen, the exhibition traced the evolution of space within a gallery and examined the essence of art creation itself. This collaborative endeavor aims to showcase the labor behind art handling, the residual imprints left behind, and the process of creating an exhibition. Che’s eponymous artist book rendition of the project archives the exhibition and performances in a tangible, interactive form. It captures the hidden labor of the gallery setups through photos, text, and performances. It reveals spatial transformations and invites viewers to sense the physicality of installation, bridging the gap between artistic labor and the audience.
